There is more confusion and misunderstanding regarding Telephone Line Seizure than any other aspect of emergency telephone systems. The reasons for this confusion range from simply not being technically inclined to outright misrepresentation of facts regarding line seizure technology. The differences between Telephone Line Sharing and Telephone Line Seizure are simple to understand, fundamental and, in the case of Telephone Line Sharing, may expose you to liability unnecessarily. Telephone line Sharing This simply means that a telephone line is used by more than one telephone device. In the case of emergency telephones, it may mean that an emergency phone shares a phone line with a fax machine, a standard telephone, a modem or even other emergency phones. In the event that one telephone device is in use when another device tries to use the line, the device trying to dial out will be prevented from doing so. This means the call would not go through. | ![]() |
Picture a scenario where an emergency telephone is sharing a phone line with your fax machine. Your fax machine is in use and then your elevator gets stuck. When your tenant or customer tries to use the emergency phone…it won't work. Why? Because the fax machine was in control of the dial tone. Another scenario might be that multiple emergency phones are sharing a line with each other. In this case, one phone may work but block the others from working until the first call is complete or, another possibility is that as each emergency phone is activated, its activation disconnects the current call. Telephone Line Sharing involving emergency telephones in elevators DOES NOT COMPLY with ASME A17.1 or ADA Section 4.10.14 and using such a system may result in failed safety inspections and may expose users to additional liability.
Telephone Line Seizure
Kings III utilizes its own, patented technology to capture an existing telephone line for use by our emergency telephones. This technology enables any of our emergency phones to take over a phone line and use it to communicate with our monitoring station while blocking access by non-emergency telephone devices until the emergency call is completed. Our patented system actually captures the phone line even if another device is using the line. In addition, all of our emergency phones can be activated simultaneously and all of them will work to connect the callers to our monitoring facility.
To illustrate this example, imagine you have a bank of four elevators with Kings III emergency telephones connected, utilizing our Telephone Line Seizure technology, to your facsimile telephone line. Now we have placed people in all four elevators and you just pressed, "send" on your fax machine. Then…a short circuit cuts power to your elevators, trapping all of the occupants. The woman in elevator number two is the first to activate the emergency phone. Our Telephone Line Seizure dialer equipment disconnects your fax machine and places a call to our central monitoring facility. Then the people in elevators one, three and four activate their phones. Now all four elevators are connected to our central station and we have begun the notification process to get them all out.
Our Telephone Line Seizure technology IS ASME and ADA compliant. Because all phones can operate at the same time and the line being in use at the time of emergency phone activation cannot block a call from a Kings III emergency telephone, you have provided the most technologically advanced emergency telephone solution to your tenants and customers and limited your liability exposure.
Beware of other vendors offering Telephone Line Seizure technology. Many times they are really offering inferior Telephone Line Sharing. Kings III holds the patent on Telephone Line Seizure and we are the only ones that can legally offer Telephone Line Seizure for Multiple Emergency Telephone Systems.
Telephone Line Sharing versus Telephone Line Seizure. It's no contest.
Kings III's patented Telephone Line Seizure wins every time.
